Dine’ (The People) - what the Navajos call themselves

The Navajo are a proud group of people who are known worldwide for their creative arts in weaving, jewelry and pottery.  The Navajo Reservation extends over 27,000 square miles in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah and includes some of the most majestic natural sites in the southwest United States: Canyon de Chelly, Chaco Canyon, and Monument Valley.

However, much of the land in Navajo territory is harsh and the living conditions are severe.

Below are some statistics from the US 1990 Census concerning those people living on the Navajo Reservation:

v  Average per capita income is $4106

v  57.9 % live below the poverty level

v  36% of adults over the age of 25 have less than a 9th grade education

v  33.3 % of occupied housing units have no bedrooms

v  52% of occupied housing units lack complete plumbing

v  54% of occupied housing units burn wood for heating

v  77.5% of occupied housing units have no telephones
